The Americans are the second largest investors in Poland and key clients of the Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH). Investments from the United States represent nearly 26% of all projects that PAIH has supported since 2016. Currently, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, it assists in the decision-making process of over 30 projects.
Supporting the inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) is one of the main tasks of the Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH). The total value of its investments increased from over PLN 6 billion in 2016 to nearly PLN 13 billion in 2019. Of the 260 projects supported by PAIH since 2016, as many as 70 came from the United States (26%). One in four American investments were related to high technology development activities. This is an important change, considering that the share of such projects among all those serviced by PAIH/PAIiIZ since 2000 is 10%.
The Americans are among the key investors served by us. Poland focuses on the development of innovation, therefore we put emphasis on attracting projects that guarantee knowledge transfer and high quality jobs. The potential of the IT sector, and above all of high class specialists, is recognized by many foreign investors with whom PAIH cooperates. Among them are also companies from the United States. One out of four American investments that we have helped to implement were related to high technology development activities," notes Grażyna Ciurzyńska, acting President of the Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH). Google's latest investment is another proof of the trust that IT giants place in Poland and Polish specialists.
- We are glad that another global player is choosing Poland as a location for an important investment. Thanks to this investment, Poland is now a world leader in data processing centers - says Grażyna Ciurzyńska.
The COVID-19 epidemic in Europe and worldwide forced PAIH to introduce changes in how it serves investors. The agency moved all meetings to video conference platforms. It organizes a kind of virtual location visits, arranging meetings with authorities at the local and central level, media managers or service providers for potential investors. Among the entrepreneurs who use this formula of meetings are also investors from the USA.
This year the Agency supported seven American investments from such industries as: modern business services (BSS), electronics, household appliances. One of them was a project of Hyland Software, which is considered to be one of the innovators and leaders in its field. It employs over 3.5 thousand people in several locations around the world (including London, Sao Paulo and Tokyo). In Poland, the American company plans to create a research and development centre where a team of nearly 80 engineers will develop new products and services for the entire group. The Agency's experts advised the investor in finding the best possible location.
It is also worth mentioning the investment of Mohawk company, which specializes in data processing. The investor decided to open an office in Kraków, where he plans to develop his R&D centre with 30 employees, mainly programmers. Before making the final location decision, at the stage of market research, PAIH supported the investor in obtaining the necessary legal and market information and helped to solve problematic formal employment issues.
Another example from this year's PAIH portfolio is the latest project of Aptiv, which has been operating in Poland for over 20 years. The Aptiv Technical Centre in Kraków was launched in 2000 and now employs over 2000 engineers and 900 corporate specialists. It is the largest R&D laboratory of the company in the world, but also one of the key R&D centres in Poland. One of the latest projects of the Aptiv Centre is the creation of research infrastructure for autonomous vehicles and testing of active safety technologies worth 25 million PLN, which includes, among others, construction of a test track.
Currently PAIH supports 30 projects of investors from the United States. The same as at the beginning of March this year.
- Poland is relatively well coping with the situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent forecasts show that despite the economic recession this year and the slowdown in 2021 and 2022, Poland will remain the leader of economic growth among the largest economies of the European Union. The COVID-19 crisis may exacerbate the reshoring phenomenon, i.e. the return of production to home countries, close to target markets. Due to quite optimistic forecasts concerning a slight decrease in Polish GDP this year and a relatively fast rebound in 2021, interest in investing in Poland will increase, also among investors from across the ocean - says Gra¿yna Ciurzyñska, acting President of the Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH).
